Chapter 23: Her Terms
I washed my hands first.
There was a bucket by the barn, and I scrubbed my pig-red forearms to the elbow while a hundred and ten people waited.
Nobody said a word.
Morven stood by the hay bale with her paper cup, pretending to look at the sky.
I dried my hands on my jeans and took the velvet box out of my coat.
My knees did not want to go down in the frozen mud.
I made them.
"Morven MacDonough," I said.
"Oh, no," she said. "You're using my whole name."
"I'm using it on purpose."
"Nolan, there are children."
"They can watch."
She bit her lip, and her eyes were wet.
I opened the box.
The ring was my great-grandmother's, a small old garnet, and the gold had gone soft with wear.
"I don't have a speech," I said. "I had one on the drive, and it was bad."
"Good."
"Three years ago a woman held a boy's chest shut with her bare hands, and I was too tired to say her name. I'd like to spend the next sixty saying it. Marry me."
The yard stayed absolutely silent.
Morven put down her cup.
She knelt in the mud across from me, in her good coat, and took the box out of my hand.
"I have terms," she said.
A few of the firemen laughed.
"Of course you do."
"One. You eat dinner."
"I will."
"Two. You tell me before you do anything stupid, so I can talk you out of it."
"Agreed."
"Three." She turned the ring over under the light. "Nothing happens in my house that I would be embarrassed to explain to your mother."
"Your house?"
"Our house. And your mother has seen worse than us, I'm sure. Which makes this one easy." She looked up. "Yes. Yes, you idiot. Put it on me."
