Chapter 25: The Cost
The deputy auditor asked to meet us in a diner off Route 20, because she said her office had too many ears.
She was already in the back booth when we came in, still in the brown cardigan, with a cup of tea she wasn't drinking.
Sabina slid in beside her.
Cass and I took the bench opposite.
Stefan stood at the end of the booth with his hands in his pockets, because Cass had said he could come, and had not said he could sit.
"I'll be plain," the deputy said. "We have a preliminary finding. I wanted you to hear it before it goes in writing."
"Good news or bad?" Cass asked.
"It's both, and I don't know which will weigh more."
She opened a folder and turned it around so we could read.
At the top was a figure, circled in red.
$0.00.
"This is the balance of the Lakeshore Settlement Trust as of this month," she said. "Not just yours. All twelve beneficiaries. It's gone."
