Chapter 6: Refused Transport

Miles waited for me in the hospital cafeteria with two paper cups of coffee.

I hadn't eaten in a day, and he put a plain bagel in front of me without a word.

Jenna sat down on my other side and looked him over.

"You're the paramedic."

"Miles Garner," he said. "Santa Monica Fire."

He slid the folder across the table.

"This is my incident report from that night. I wrote it before the shift ended, and I filed it with my captain."

I opened it.

The second page had a box labeled Refusal, and a line under it in his small square handwriting.

Patient requested transport. Husband stated "false alarm" and declined on her behalf. Patient overrode and left with crew.

Under it, a time.

3:19 a.m.

"I wrote what I saw," Miles said. "Nothing else."

"You wrote that he refused for me."

"He did."

I closed the folder.

"Why are you giving it to me?"

"Because in this job people usually tell me it wasn't anyone's fault, and I stop checking."

He turned his cup in his fingers.

"This one I couldn't stop checking."

"Is that a normal thing for you?"

"No."

He looked at Jenna, then back at me.

"The dispatch center keeps the audio of every call for three years. Both of your calls will be in the file. You'd have to request them yourself, in writing, as the caller. They won't give them to me."
