Chapter 16: Page Nine
Bev's van came up the farm road at eight with a casserole in the passenger seat.
I was on the porch steps.
Lukas's car was gone.
Sam had gone out to the orchard without a word, and I had let him.
"I left Delaney asleep on my couch with a cat on her head," Bev said.
"She's fine. She's ashamed. She ate four pancakes.
"Why do you look like you've been hit by a truck?"
"Lukas came."
"Of course he did."
"He said Adele is accusing me of embezzling from the foundation."
Bev sat down hard on the step beside me.
"Page nine?"
"Page nine."
"Then I want to see it," she said. "Get the list."
My copy of the guest list was in my purse, folded in four.
I had carried it since the print shop on Route 9.
I spread it on the porch boards.
Pages one through eight were my own handwriting.
Page nine was Adele's looping hand.
Thirty-one names, in two columns.
Bev ran her finger down the first column and went quiet.
"Lee, I know these people.
"That's the treasurer. That's the board secretary.
"The widow who gave the hospital its new wing. The two surgeons."
"The donors."
"They're not donors." Bev tapped the page. "They're voters.
"My aunt sat on the board for six years.
"She told me once the president's seat comes up in December, and it takes twenty-one of these thirty-one to keep it."
I looked at the page.
I thought of the barn, and the rows of long tables.
I thought of Adele handing me a roll of cardinal stamps in the restaurant, and saying she had written this page herself.
"She wanted them in the room," I said slowly.
"For the announcement."
"For her party. For a nice happy engagement, in front of every vote she needed."
