Chapter 18: Delaney's Turn
Leah's POV
Adele held her luncheon on Wednesday, in the main lobby of Marlow County Hospital, under the donor wall.
She had not canceled it, even with her lawyers' suit against Sam two days old and the prosecutor vote still set for Friday.
That was how I knew she was frightened.
Sam's envelope was on the dashboard of Bev's van, the seal facing up.
Delaney had read it twice that morning, and looked at it again now.
"She sued the orchard to scare us out of coming," she said.
"Then we came."
The invitation had come to every name on page nine, on cream card, in her own looping hand.
Friends of the Hospital. Noon. A word about the foundation's future.
Bev drove me.
Delaney sat in the back seat in a navy dress that was not green.
"I wore this to my father's funeral," she said. "It's the only thing I own that she didn't pick."
"You don't have to go in," I said.
"I know."
"Sam would say the same."
"Sam would stand at the back with his arms crossed and do nothing, and I love him for it.
"I am not my brother."
She opened the car door.
The lobby smelled of lilies.
Thirty round tables had been set under the donor wall, with white cloths and name cards.
Twenty-six of the thirty-one were seated.
The treasurer sat at a corner table alone, with his coat on.
Adele stood at the head of the room in the camel coat and the pearls, with a glass in her hand.
She had a smile ready.
It slipped for half a second when she saw the three of us in the doorway.
Then she put it back on.
"My dear friends," she said. "We have a few guests who weren't expected."
Nobody laughed.
"Mrs. Halvorsen," Delaney said, in a clear voice that carried to the back, "I'd like to say something."
