Chapter 19: The Night Lukas Lost
The treasurer and a surgeon went to Adele's study that afternoon with a camera.
The stamp was in the top drawer on the right-hand side, under the checkbook.
The L had a crack in it.
They photographed it next to twelve checks, and by dinner every name on page nine had the picture.
Adele was not arrested.
She was not even charged yet.
But the hospital guards had walked her out the side door, with a hundred phones raised, and I had heard that she did not speak the whole way to the car.
Delaney had a red mark on her cheek and a smile she couldn't hide.
"She slapped me in front of the donor wall," she told Bev. "I'm going to have it framed."
I got back to the farm at seven.
My mother was asleep.
I washed the dishes with my bandaged hand held out of the water, and I listened to the house tick.
At nine, headlights came up the lane.
I knew the engine.
I dried my hands and went out on the porch.
Lukas parked and sat in his car for a full minute before he got out.
He had shaved.
He wore the same suit as Saturday, only wrinkled.
He didn't walk up the steps.
"I'm not here to ask you home," he said.
"Good."
"I went to the house today.
"I stood in her study and looked in her drawer.
"She had three more stamps in there, Lee.
"One was mine."
I said nothing.
"I've been signing things for her since I was twenty-two.
"I thought she was looking after me."
"She was."
"No." He shook his head. "She was keeping me."
He took an envelope from his jacket and held it out.
"There's a cashier's check for the hundred and eighty thousand.
"I sold the car. I sold my watch.
"The rest is a promissory note, and you can have it witnessed."
I took the envelope.
It was heavier than I expected.
"And this," said Lukas, and held out a second, thinner one.
It had a lawyer's stamp in the corner.
