Chapter 20: The Board
The hospital boardroom had a long table with thirty-one chairs and a wall of framed presidents.
Adele's portrait hung third from the end.
The frame had a brass plate that read Adele Halvorsen, President, and a blank space after the comma.
I sat in the back row of the visitors' chairs with Delaney on my left and Sam on my right.
Bev had stayed home with my mother.
She had told me to text her every ten minutes.
I had texted her once.
Friday, six o'clock.
The thirty-one members filed in and took their seats.
Adele came last.
She wore a navy suit and her pearls, and she walked to the head of the table like a woman entering her own church.
She sat.
She looked down the row of faces and found most of them looking at their papers.
"We'll begin with the first item," she said.
"I'll ask the secretary to read the referral concerning Mrs. Leah Halvorsen."
Nobody said anything.
The board secretary, a young woman with a pen in her hair, looked at the treasurer.
The treasurer raised one finger.
"Point of order, Madam President.
"I move to table that item, and to move straight to a motion of my own."
"You are out of order."
"I have the signatures of nineteen members that say I am not."
He slid a sheet of paper down the table.
It passed through eight hands before it reached the head.
Adele did not touch it.
"The motion," said the treasurer, "is to remove Adele Halvorsen from the presidency of this board and from the chair of the Halvorsen Foundation, effective tonight.
"The grounds are the forged signatures on twelve checks, and the use of foundation funds to pay a private employee.
