Chapter 21: One Punch
Sam's POV
I was repairing the gate hinge on Saturday morning when Lukas Halvorsen's borrowed pickup came up the lane.
It was a rust-brown thing with one headlight.
I put the wrench down.
I had told myself all week that I would handle this well.
I had also told myself I would not hit him, and that was easier to say with a wrench in my hand.
Adele had promised to sell every lot and crew of Halvorsen Homes on Monday morning, and half the county was already calling me about it.
I did not know what Lukas's mother wanted from my gate, but I knew his face would tell me.
He got out and left the door open.
He looked like a man who had slept in a church.
"Sam," he said.
"You're on my land."
"I know. I'll be quick."
"Be quicker."
"I came to say I'm sorry about your sister."
I said nothing.
He swallowed.
"I met her at the office Christmas party two years ago.
"I didn't know whose idea it was, I didn't ask, and I didn't care, because she was easy to talk to.
"That's not an excuse.
"She was in my life because my mother put her there, and I let her stay."
"You let her take a picture of your hand and send it to your wife."
"Yes."
"You let her wear a green dress and stand up in my barn."
"Yes."
"And then you stood there with your mouth open."
His eyes were wet.
"Yes," he said. "I did."
I had planned a lot of things to say.
None of them were in my head now.
I watched him and thought, He really is just a soft man.
It would have been easier if he were a monster.
Then his face changed.
He looked past me, up the yard to the kitchen window, where a light was on.
I knew what he was looking at.
