Chapter 9: Her Mother's Price

My mother came through the front door without knocking.

She still had her gala shawl over one arm and her pearls straight.

"Good evening, Counselor," Keir said from the kitchen doorway.

She ignored him and looked at me.

At my bandaged hand, at the blood on my dress, at the distance between the two of us in that hallway.

"Millicent," she said. "Get your things."

"For what?"

"You're coming home with me tonight. We are going to fix this."

"You told me I was a liability."

"I told you what the press needed to hear." She set her shawl on the table, as if she lived there. "Richard has canceled our meeting on Monday. He says my daughter humiliated his son in front of two hundred people."

"Porter humiliated me first."

"That doesn't matter."

"It matters to me."

"It matters to me, too," my mother said. "That deal is eleven years of my work. Do you understand that? Eleven years."

I stared at her.

I had waited eight days for her to ask if I was all right.

She hadn't asked.

"Here is what we're going to do," she said. "You will call Bree in the morning. You will say you were hurt and said unkind things. You will come to the wedding and hold her bouquet."
