Chapter 21: Open Door

Lena's POV

Kendall stood up so fast that her chair went over.

"Who let him in?" she said. "I don't know this man."

"You know me," he said. "I fixed your porch railing in March."

He stayed in the doorway, because he had been told to wait for his name and he had not forgotten it.

"I'm not here to make trouble. I wanted to ask you one thing in front of somebody."

"Get out of Joan's house."

"Is it mine?"

He took out his phone and held up the gray picture with the September date.

Nobody in the room moved except Kendall, whose breathing had gone short.

"You sent me this," he said. "You said it was ours."

Joan's eyes went to the phone, then to the woman in the cream dress.

She had spent five months building a daughter-in-law, and I watched her read the date and do the arithmetic.

"Kendall," Joan said. "Look at me."

Kendall did.

"Whose child is it?"

"Joan, I was going to tell you. After the toast..."

"Whose?"

Kendall's hand went to her mouth.

It was not a performance. I had watched enough people on the stand to know the difference.

She looked at the man in the doorway.

"It's his," she said. "It was never Nolan's. I didn't want to be poor again."

Her voice cracked on the word.

"Nolan was kind to me. You were kind to me. I thought if the baby came, nobody would count weeks."

"You counted ours," my husband said quietly. "You knew I couldn't."

"I suspected. I didn't know." She wiped her face. "I needed it to be true."

The man in the doorway looked at her with no triumph at all.
