Chapter 5: Two Hours

Sunday night, Charlie decided he was never going to sleep again.

He screamed at one in the morning, and again at two.

At three I was walking the room in a loop, from the window to the bathroom door, and my legs had stopped feeling like mine.

I had a hearing in ten hours and I could not remember my own phone number.

I opened the door to the hallway because the walls were too close.

Nate was at the end of the corridor with a flashlight, checking the fire door.

He saw me and stopped.

"Ma'am."

"I'm sorry. He's loud. I know it's three in the morning."

"This floor is empty except for a salesman in 220, and he's wearing earplugs."

"I'm sorry."

"You've apologized four times since Friday," Nate said. "I'm keeping count. The hotel has a limit of ten."

I almost laughed.

Charlie shrieked against my collarbone.

"Give him to me," Nate said.

"What?"

"Two hours. I'll take him down to the manager's office and sit with the door open. If he gets hungry, I'll call your room and you'll hear the phone. If you're not asleep in five minutes, I'll bring him back."

"You can't hold a baby at three in the morning."

"I've been holding my niece since the day she was born. She screamed for four months." He held his arms out a little. "I'm good at it. It's the only thing I'm good at that no one writes on my review."

I looked at his hands.

They were big and steady, and he wasn't smiling.

"Two hours," I said. "Not more."

"Not more."

I put Charlie into his arms, and my arms felt weightless and wrong.
