Chapter 11: The Moon Court

Mara's POV

Odette took the note from the maid and tucked it into her sleeve.

"Not here," she said. "Somewhere private, Mara. Please."

I stepped into the corridor and closed my door behind me.

Elias stayed inside. I could feel him through the wood, as still as a post.

"Say it," I said.

Odette's face did not change, but her voice dropped.

"Bastian knows about tonight."

"Tonight?"

"The maid saw you. Elias in your doorway at midnight, in your arms."

She sighed, very gently.

"A bound Luna with her Beta, the night before the Moon Court. Do you know what the King does about that?"

I said nothing.

"It is called breaking the bond."

"The Luna is stripped of her name and sent out of the territory with nothing."

"It has happened before."

"The bond is signed away."

"It is signed. It is not pronounced."

She reached out and straightened my collar, as she had when we were girls.

"Bastian does not want that for you."

"He will speak for you at the Court, if you stand beside him and say it was mutual."

"And if you say nothing more about the fever."

I looked at her pretty, sad face.

"Why does the fever matter to you?"

She blinked.

"It does not," she said. "I only want to keep you safe."

"No," I said.

"Mara."

"I will say what happened. All of it."

Odette's hand fell away from my collar.

For one moment, she looked at me without any warmth at all.

Then the smile came back.

"I tried," she said. "Remember that I tried."

The Moon Court met the next night on the terrace of the King's hall.

The moon was so full and bright that the torches looked pale.

Two hundred wolves from three packs stood in rows along the stone.
