Chapter 6: The Post
"No," I said.
Bastian's eyebrows lifted a little.
"You have not heard the whole offer."
"I do not need to. I will not tell the Court it was mutual, and I will not take your house."
"Then Elias goes."
"Then fire him," I said. "Tonight, in front of the elders, the day after the whole pack heard the Alpha never came to his Luna's bed."
"Tell them why the one man who stood beside me is being punished. Tell them it was a favor to me."
His face did not change.
"Say it to the King, too," I said. "The Moon Court is in four days. The King will want to know what kind of Alpha dismisses the Beta who kept his Luna safe."
For the first time all week, Bastian had no answer ready.
He turned to the window.
"He stays," he said at last. "For now."
"He stays for good."
"We will see what the Court says." He did not look at me. "But he is not your mate, Mara. Do not start thinking of him as one."
"He is not anyone's mate," I said. "He is a man who does his work. I wish I could say that about you."
I walked out and closed the door softly, because slamming it would have told him what he had done to me.
Elias was not in the corridor.
I found him an hour later at the Black Forest barracks, a long low building at the edge of the pack lands where the lawn ended and the pines began.
Half the patrol was there, sharpening blades and mending coats.
They stood when I came in. All of them.
"Sit," I said. "Please. I am looking for the Beta."
"Gone to the north gate, Luna," said a grizzled warrior. "He will be back by dark."
