Chapter 14: The Board

Jonas had not slept, and he walked into the boardroom at eight o'clock on Friday with last night's shirt on and no plan.

Seven chairs sat around the long walnut table.

Five were taken.

His father's chair, at the head, stood empty with the Deacon's old nameplate still screwed to the wood.

Lester sat at its right hand with a legal pad and a smile.

"Cousin," he said. "I'm glad you could make it. We moved the meeting up."

"I noticed."

"In light of the weekend's excitement."

Jonas sat down.

He kept his hands flat on the table, because they wanted to be fists.

Across from him sat the four who held voting shares beside his own.

They were two retired growers, a banker from Moultrie, and an aunt who had never forgiven him for being born after Lester.

They looked at him with pity and embarrassment.

He thought of the VFW hall, the song, Cooper's cheek on his temple, and Lester in the doorway.

He thought of Cooper walking down Pecan Row Road in the dark.

Rudy had called at one in the morning to say he was safe, and then hung up before Jonas could say thank you.
