Chapter 10: Power Out
The storm came in on Thursday night.
By eleven the power was out all over Brigantine.
I lay in the brass bed and listened to the wind take the shingles.
The house creaked in every joint.
The bay was a white roar under the window.
Every few minutes something struck the porch, a branch or a loose chair, and slid.
I had not told Declan about the log.
I had come home on Monday with my hands cold and gone straight up the stairs.
I had lain awake three nights deciding how to say it.
*Philadelphia would pay a great deal for that page.*
I did not know what I thought.
I only knew that whatever I did with it, I wanted it to be my own choice.
At one in the morning I got up and went to the door, because I had heard a sound.
It was not the wind.
It was low and steady, a little way down the hall, and it was somebody breathing.
I stood with my palm on the wood.
Then I turned the key and opened the door a hand's width.
The hall was black.
A weak gray light came from the window at the far end.
In it, at the top of the stairs, with his back against the wall, sat Declan.
