Sold to the Man Who Took Me, but I Hold His Life novel · Chapter 9 of 24
Chapter 9: The House Log
I went back to the Starlite alone on Monday afternoon, when the building was empty.
Nobody had told me not to.
I told myself I wanted my costume bag.
The back door was unlocked, and the doorman's stool stood empty with his thermos beside it, still warm.
The hall was dim and smelled of floor wax.
At the end of it, where the office door had been, the strip of black cloth hung over the empty frame.
There was a light behind it.
I stood on the carpet in my coat and listened.
A pen scratched on paper.
I should have gone.
I put my hand on the cloth and drew it a little to one side.
Augie sat at the desk under the green lamp with his back to me, in his shirtsleeves, writing in a large leather book.
It was a different one from the book on my kitchen counter, taller, with a cloth spine and a ribbon.
It lay open at a spot about halfway through.
On the corner of the desk, in the lamp's light, was a smaller sheet of paper, written in a different hand.
