Chapter 8: What the Manager Said
Roz's POV
Kieran came to Brigantine on Sunday with a bag of bagels and a lot of questions.
I let him in, and he stood in the hall looking at the high ceiling and the dark staircase.
The little table by the wall had nothing on it but a brass tray.
"It's not what I thought," he said.
"What did you think?"
"Chains. A guy in a robe." He shrugged. "A swimming pool."
"There's a bay."
"I saw it." He put the bagels on the counter. "There's nothing here, Roz. It's like nobody lives here."
"Somebody does."
I made him coffee.
We sat at the kitchen table, and he ate two bagels without looking at me, and then he said, with his mouth full, "He sits in a car outside my school."
I put my cup down.
"Every Tuesday. I've seen him three times. Black Lincoln, parked across the lot by the library." Kieran swallowed. "I thought it was a cop. I went over once to see. He saw me coming and rolled up the window."
