I hung the bridle on its peg.
I took my time doing it.
"On the show," I said.
"On the show."
"Not on me."
"Not on you," Huck said. "That's yours to decide, and it can take as long as it takes. I'm asking to carry the heavy stuff."
I looked at the saddle rack.
Two years ago he'd put his hands on either side of me there and not on me.
Today he was standing in the door asking permission.
"Yes," I said. "To the show. Not yet to you."
His shoulders finally dropped.
"That's more than I came in with," he said.
"Don't get comfortable, Denver. You still can't light a fire."
"I've been practicing on your mother's woodstove."
"I smelled it."
The production meeting was at ten, on the front porch, because Kip liked the light.
He stood by Dad's carved post with his coffee.
The woman in the camel coat sat on the porch swing with her phone.
Every family still on the show sat on the steps and the rail.
The Butte sisters sat with them, the older one with her ankle in a black boot.
I stood up.
