Chapter 23: Our Tent
I stopped at the edge of the frost.
It was a two-person tent, green, staked out tight and square.
The guy lines were tensioned so evenly they hummed in the breeze.
"You pitched this," I said.
"This afternoon. While your mother had everyone peeling potatoes." He pushed his glasses up. "It took me two hours. I'd like that to stay between us."
"Where did it come from?"
"The hardware store on Park Street. Tuesday." He shrugged. "Tent 9 is in an evidence locker in the county building. I thought we should have one that isn't."
I walked up to it.
The door was rolled back and tied.
Inside, two sleeping pads were zipped together into one wide bed, with two bags zipped into one on top.
My dad's wool blanket was folded at the foot.
A lantern hung from the loop at the top of the center pole, turned low and gold.
Nothing else was on the pole.
No clip.
No zip tie.
No little black box.
I looked at it for a long time.
"I didn't check it," Huck said behind me. "There was nothing to check. I bought it off a shelf and carried it here in my truck. Nobody touched it but me."
"I'm not going to check it either."
"No?"
"No."
I turned around.
He was standing in the moonlight with his hands in his jacket pockets.
Under the jacket was the gray thermal from night one, the one he'd pulled on inside out in the frost.
"You kept that shirt."
"It's my lucky shirt," he said. "I wore it right side out tonight. I checked twice."
I laughed, and my breath smoked.
Down the hill, the lodge windows were yellow, and somebody was laughing on the porch, Roy or the grandmother.
The creek ran loud in the dark.
No helicopter.
No drone.
No red light.
Just a meadow my dad mowed every August, and a man who'd moved his whole life to stand in it.
