Chapter 26: Rule Seven
"Let me handle my mother," Abram said.
It was Saturday night, the night before she came, and it was the fourth time he'd said it.
We were in the kitchen.
Hazel was down for the night, and the monitor hissed on the island between Rand's laptop and Breck's third beer.
"You three stay upstairs," Abram said. "I'll meet her at the door and tell her what she needs to hear."
"Abram," Rand said.
"I know her. She doesn't back down from a crowd. She backs down from one man who won't move."
It was a good plan.
It was also the plan he'd had in the dining room of the club, with two hundred people watching.
I held up a hand.
"That's the sentence," I said.
"Which one?"
"Let me handle it. You said it the night you lied about me, and I stood at that bar and let you."
His jaw went tight.
He didn't tell me I was being unfair, because he knew I wasn't.
I pulled my copper card out of my back pocket and took the Sharpie out of Breck's shirt.
"Sparky, that's my good Sharpie," Breck said.
"It's about to be historic."
Under rule six I wrote a seven.
"Nothing about Hazel or this house is decided by one of us alone," I read out loud.
