Chapter 10: The Family She Was Made For

I had not slept, because of one line on a résumé.

Two years at Chesapeake Fertility Center, the clinic where I had signed every consent form for my own eggs, and then for a stranger's.

I had asked myself all night whether Haley had stood in a room with my chart.

Emmett was waiting outside Hattie's green door at nine the next morning.

He had a gray work truck and a stapled stack of paper.

"Everything the agency has," he said, and handed it through the window. "Your husband's phone calls, the check, the date Ms. Merritt came in, who spoke to her. I kept nothing back."

I turned the pages in the cab on the way to my house.

It was all there, in order.

Nothing was missing, nothing was softened, and he had underlined the line where his own front desk had written: family request, do not send file to wife.

"That's the first time anyone's given me the whole thing," I said.

"It should have been the first time five weeks ago."

I looked at him for a moment.

"Thank you," I said.

Hattie, in the back seat with Stella on her lap, cleared her throat very loudly.

"I'm here, you know. Two feet away. I can hear everything."

"We know," Emmett and I said together.

Ward was at the brokerage until six.

I had checked.

I had the key to my own front door, and I opened it with Hattie holding my elbow and Emmett carrying the empty boxes.
