Chapter 22: The Ringing
The Bellkeeper stood at the foot of the stair with both palms flat on the wall and his face turned up to the dark.
He held the end of the ring-rope in one hand, and he put it into Naho's hand without a word.
His eyes were wet.
She understood it was a gift.
She took it in both hands.
"This is the Weir's ring-rope," she said, in the passage, where sound lived.
"There's a knot in it for every house, tied by the people who live in them."
"The Bellkeeper is giving it to me so that the Bell is rung by those who want it rung."
The rope went the color of new hemp, and each knot warmed.
The grey went out of the threads in the order they had been tied.
Then she said the names.
She said them house by house, from the cooper's to the last door at the end of the lane.
There were sixty-one of them, and each one was true.
It took as long as the sun needed to clear the mill roof.
When she reached the ribbon house, a small voice said "Here," and the hall laughed softly and settled.
