I pulled out the chair beside him and sat.
The kitchen smelled of cold coffee and the lamb nobody had finished.
Tullio held his cane across his knees with both hands.
"You took the ring and gave it away," he said.
"I told you I'd take it."
"You told forty people at my table." He wheezed out something like a laugh. "Corrado went gray before you finished the sentence."
"Is that why you're up?"
"I'm up because I have one thing left to ask, and it is not about the chairs."
I waited.
"Rosa will forgive you anything," he said.
"Her mother was the same. It is a weakness in good women, and I used it for thirty years."
"Mr. Bardi."
"Listen. When I am gone, people will come to you with wet faces."
He coughed into the dish towel, and I watched his shoulders fold around it.
"They will say they were afraid," he said. "They will say they had no choice. Some of it will be true."
