Chapter 20: The Mother

My mother's bus was forty minutes late, and Gregory arrived twenty minutes early.

On Wednesday evening he stood in my doorway with two grocery bags and a bottle of wine.

He looked like a man about to be interviewed for his life.

"She'll hate me," he said.

"She won't hate you."

"She'll hate that I'm forty-one."

"She'll hate that you're a Hargreave. The forty-one is a bonus."

I took the bags and put them on the counter.

"Also, there's an adultery claim with your name on it. She has a lot to worry about."

"My lawyer says it won't hold. We met after you left him."

"We met in an elevator, and I told you no four times."

"Five. I counted the car."

I laughed, and he caught me by the waist and backed me into the front door.

"Gregory, she'll be here in forty minutes."

"Then we have thirty-five."

"You are unbelievable."

"You're not saying no."

I wasn't.

I had my fists in his collar before I finished the thought, and his mouth was on mine, hot and sure.

He turned me, so my back was flat against the cold wood of the door, and shoved my skirt up around my hips.

"No underwear," he said, hoarse. "Pamela."
