Chapter 10: Mud and Guns

"Nico Greco," I said.

"You know my name. I'm flattered."

Two of his men came in behind him and stood on either side of the broken doorway.

Both had their hands in their jackets.

Rocco had left at dawn to take the drives to his own people, and my crew was out at the gate with the fire marshal.

I was alone in the wreck with three men and a roof full of sky.

"Terrible thing," Nico said, looking around at the ash. "All that work. All that money. And Friday was going to be such a big day."

He grinned.

"You know what the Corsinis say about you, Mrs. Ferrante? They say a bride who came to the Don with no blood and no history doesn't belong in his house."

"I belong to the man whose ring I'm wearing," I said.

A second voice laughed from the doorway, low and sweet.

"That's one way to put it."

Bianca stepped over the broken glass in a pale cream coat, with her blonde hair brushed and her lipstick perfect.

She did not look like a woman who had been thrown out of a house.

She had come to see something she had paid for.

"Hello, Camilla," she said.

"Bianca."

"You look tired."

"I stayed up late," I said. "Somebody had a party."

Her smile slipped for half a second.

"I told you I only wait," she said.

"You did."

"Nico." She stepped behind him and put one hand on his arm. "She's alone. Roc is on the other side of the city. Do it now."

"Here?"

"Right here. Right where she can see her work."

Nico took the gun off his belt.

I put my hand inside my trench coat and took mine out.

It was a compact Glock I had carried every day since the second week of my marriage, and it had never been out of its holster in front of another person.
