I told the driver to take me to the penthouse.

Glenn had sent the car for me at noon, and it had waited at the curb of my parents' street while I packed a bag.

I had not been inside his real home yet.

The sister building stood across a plaza from the tower, thirty floors of dark glass.

The elevator opened straight into his front hall.

It was a big, plain room with a long window wall and the whole city lit up behind it.

There was one couch, one lamp, and a kitchen island with a single plate drying on a towel.

On the counter lay a paperback cookbook with a stained cover and a strip of paper marking one page.

I opened it to the strip.

Brisket.

"I took it out of the sixth-floor trash," Glenn said behind me. "It's mine now."

I turned around.

He had taken off his jacket and his tie, and he stood in his shirtsleeves with his hands open at his sides.

He had decided not to hide anything, and he did not know where to put his arms.

"I want to say this right," he said. "I haven't yet."

"Say it."

"I should have told you at the courthouse. I should have told you when you asked me to marry you."
