Chapter 19: The Hearing
They held the hearing in the gym, because nowhere else would hold the school.
Every bleacher was full by a quarter to twelve.
The board sat at a long table on center court, under the banner with the heron on it.
The chair sat in the middle with his cane, and the woman with the pen sat three seats down.
Delaney's father sat in the first row of the bleachers.
Delaney stood at a podium beside the table with a folder in her hands.
I sat at a small table facing them, with Grayson and Lane on one side of me and Sean on the other.
In the front bleacher, Rhys sat beside his mother.
She had not said a word to his father yet.
The chair had looked at her once when he came in, and she had looked back, and that was all.
"This hearing is called to order," the chair said. "The charge is falsifying a student statement. The Liaison will present."
Delaney smiled at the gym.
"Three students have filed complaints against Mindy Kincaid," she said. "She pressured them into public confessions, and she forged a signature to cover it."
