Chapter 16: East Wind
The fire had started in a gully on the far side of the ridge an hour before sunset.
By the time the pagers went off, the east wind had picked it up and thrown it over the top.
By nine it was running downhill through the second-growth fir toward the lake.
Our little station became the place everybody stopped.
Two county engines pulled into the lot at half past six.
Then a water tender, then a state crew in yellow shirts, then a sheriff's car with its lights going.
The fire captain spread a map across the hood of our rig and held the corners down with my coffee mugs.
"Everything east of the lake road is going," he said. "The Hall's on the water, it'll be fine. North shore's the problem."
He tapped the map, along the top of the lake.
"One road in. Along the shore, past the Hall's gate. If the fire crosses it, whoever's up there is cut off."
"Who's up there?" my partner said.
"Wolves," the captain said. "A pack. I don't know how many."
My mother turned the left bay into a burn room with a stack of wet sheets and every saline bag we owned.
