Chapter 13: The Ring on the Table
Colton didn't say anything.
He looked at the ring swinging on its chain, and then at my face.
The creek ran on behind us, and somewhere a halyard tapped against a mast.
"Say that again," he said.
"My name is Leona Anne Finley."
"The wife."
"Yes."
He turned and walked back into the cabin.
I followed him, because there was nowhere else to go.
He opened the drawer under the table and took out his own ring from its folded handkerchief.
He set it on the wood.
I unclasped the chain, slid my ring off it, and set it down next to his.
Two plain gold bands sat side by side under the lamp.
He picked up mine and tilted it to the light.
"I will," he read.
"That's what the chaplain asked me to say."
"You knew in the first week."
"I knew the night you hired me."
