Chapter 24: Eyes Open
The county records office at nine on a Monday smelled of toner and stale coffee.
The clerk behind the counter was a woman in her fifties with reading glasses pushed up into her hair.
She looked at the two of us, and then at the old license Gordy was holding.
"This is the Finlay record," she said.
"Finley," I said. "With an e."
"It's been wrong for seven years."
"It has."
She stamped a red word across the old paper and slid it back across the counter without comment.
VOID.
"The county is sorry," she said. "I mean that. Somebody in this building typed it fast."
Colton leaned on the counter beside me in the dark suit he had worn to the chapel.
"We'd like a new one," he said.
"Both of you in person?"
"Yes."
"Eyes open?"
"Always," I said.
She pushed a form across, and a pen.
