Chapter 23: The Chapel Again
The chapel at St. Brigid's smelled of candle wax and floor polish, exactly as it had seven years before.
Colton had asked me for Saturday at four, and he had asked me to wear the veil.
I stood at the back of the aisle in a plain navy dress, with my grandmother's lace over my short hair.
Nobody sat in the pews.
The old chaplain waited at the side with his book closed against his chest.
At the altar stood Colton, in a dark suit that fit him, with no borrowed sleeves.
He wasn't a stand-in this time.
I walked down the aisle on my own, past the pew where my grandfather had sat in a wheelchair with his oxygen tank.
When I reached the front, Colton took my hands.
His were warm, and they were shaking a little.
"Seven years ago you stood in front of this altar," he said, "and you said two words to a man who wasn't me."
"I was twenty-two."
"You were doing a kindness for a dying man."
"I was."
