Chapter 22: The Slow Half
The new Davenport Investigations is a storefront on Eastern Avenue with a leaking awning and a window that sticks.
Gordy had the lease signed by the Wednesday after the party.
The court sent our file boxes back with a note of apology from a clerk.
I was on my knees on the floor on a Tuesday morning, sorting them, when the bell over the door rang.
Colton stood on the mat in steel-toed boots and a yellow safety vest, with two paper bags.
"You look like a crossing guard," I said.
"I worked the gate at the terminal from five to eleven."
"Is that allowed?"
"It's my terminal." He set the bags on Gordy's desk. "The board offered me the chair back. Eight votes to nothing."
"And?"
"I took a smaller office on the dock, with a window that opens. Marsha is furious."
"Marsha's thrilled."
"Marsha is thrilled and furious. It's her natural state."
He unwrapped a sandwich and held half of it out to me, and I took it.
For a minute the only sound was Gordy's radio, playing a ballgame from the back room.
