Chapter 4: The Luna's Chair

Wynne met the Saltmarsh Alpha at the top of the pack house steps, because the Luna receives guests and nobody else had come to do it.

She stood on one crutch with the cast hidden under a long skirt.

Bram Hollister was taller than she remembered, with grey coming in at the temples and a white scar through his left eyebrow.

He wore a heavy coat the colour of wet slate, and eleven of his wolves stood at his back.

"Luna Tennant," he said. "I'm sorry we come at a hard time. I would have put this off, but the tide tables don't allow it."

"Ashfall is glad to have you, Alpha Hollister."

His eyes went down to her leg and back to her face.

He said nothing about it.

She was grateful and did not say so.

Three hundred Ashfall wolves filled the treaty hall by noon.

The long table ran down the centre, with the Saltmarsh delegation on one side and the Ashfall elders on the other.

At the head of it were two carved chairs.

One was for the Alpha, and one was for the Luna.

Wynne walked in on her crutch and found Garrick already in his seat.

In the Luna's chair, with a cushion at her back and her bandaged knee on a footstool, sat Calla Greaves.

A murmur ran down the benches.

Calla looked up at Wynne with wide, frightened eyes.

"Garrick said I could sit while my knee mends. I'll move if you need it."

Garrick didn't look at either of them.

"Let her stay," he said. "It's one afternoon."
