Chapter 4: The Yard
The headlights in the night had belonged to one of Kenton's men, who saw Tobe standing in the lane and backed out again.
Kenton himself came at first light.
I was on the porch in my father's coat with Jubal's flannel shirt buttoned under it, and my hair was still down.
Tobe stood beside me, and Jubal sat on the rail with a coffee can of black coffee going cold in his hands.
The truck came up the lane slowly, with two of Kenton's men in the bed.
Behind it, at a walk, came Sissy on my bay mare, Biscuit.
Biscuit's ears were flat, and her neck was stiff, and she was sweating in the cold.
"Shy," Kenton said, climbing out and spreading his hands. "Come on, now. You made your point."
He smiled the way he did at every Moot, wide and warm, and for a second the old habit in me wanted to smile back.
"I made it," I said. "I'm done making it."
"You took the Chain off the land." His voice stayed kind. "You know the law better than I do, honey. By the Midwinter Moot you name your table, or it's stolen."
"I know the law."
"Then you know who'll sit with you." He glanced at Tobe, then at Jubal's shirt on my body. "The Ladder says no wolf touches the Alpha's wife. Any man who does answers to me."
"You put me aside in front of a hundred and fifty people last night," I said. "Which am I, Kenton? Your wife or your leftovers?"
"Both, till the Moot says otherwise."
Tobe didn't move or speak, but the porch boards creaked under his weight.
Kenton's two men looked at the ground.
"I don't want trouble," Sissy said from the saddle, in her small voice.
