Chapter 10: The Oath
They locked Rhea in the stone cellar under the Ashfall armory.
She screamed at the guards for an hour, and then she went silent.
Dorian did not leave the gate.
He sent his pack home, every wolf of them, and stood outside the wall in the cold until the sun went down.
At dark, Kellan came to find me in the longhouse, where I sat with Lyra asleep on my chest.
"He's still there," he said. "He's asked to see you. Alone, and unarmed."
"Why would I?"
"Because he's been standing in the mud for twelve hours."
I looked down at my daughter, at her clenched fist and her mouth working in her sleep.
"Bring him to the yard," I said. "You stay."
"I wasn't going anywhere."
The yard was lit by one lantern.
Dorian stood in the middle with his hands hanging empty at his sides, and he looked ten years older.
His coat was soaked through.
I stood on the longhouse step with Lyra against my shoulder, and Kellan stood in the shadow behind me.
"I'm going to tell you," Dorian said. "Everything. I'm sorry I couldn't before."
"Go ahead."
He drew a breath that shook.
"Rhea isn't my friend."
I waited.
"She's my sister. My father's daughter. He had an affair twenty-five years ago, with a healer from the lower valley, and Rhea was the result."
The cold air seemed to stop moving.
"My mother never knew. My father kept it hidden his whole life. The pack would have torn her apart. A bastard girl, half Stroud blood, would have had a claim on the Alpha seat. There'd have been a war."
