Chapter 4: Dead at the Border

The silver left my body.

I woke at dawn drenched in sweat, and I could breathe all the way to the bottom of my lungs for the first time in four months.

My daughter kicked me hard under the ribs.

I laughed out loud, alone in the cedar room, with tears running down my face.

"Okay," I told her. "Okay. I hear you."

Hester knocked and walked in without waiting.

She took one look at me and grinned.

"There she is. Eat something, because we've got a problem."

"What problem?"

"Stonehollow warriors at the creek. Twelve of them, and their Alpha."

My smile went away.

The old mate-law came back to me.

An Alpha could claim a pregnant runaway luna and her pup, if the pup was his blood.

Dorian would not be coming for me.

He would be coming for her.

"Where's Kellan?" I asked.

"At the border, being rude to them." Hester tossed me a pair of jeans. "He says come when you can walk."

I could walk.

I could nearly run.

We went up the ridge in her truck and then on foot through the white-barked trees, until we crouched behind a boulder with the creek spread out below us.

On the far bank stood a line of Stonehollow wolves, shoulder to shoulder in their warrior jackets.

Dorian stood in front.

He looked terrible.

His shirt was wrinkled, his jaw dark with stubble, and his eyes were red.

On the near bank, Kellan stood alone with his hands in his pockets.

"I'll ask once more," Dorian said, and his voice carried up the hill. "Is my wife on your land?"

"She isn't your wife," Kellan said. "I heard the rejection from here. So did half my pack."
