Chapter 20: Osric's Hall
They pulled the sack off in the great hall of Mirefold.
I knew it by the smell of beeswax and old oak, and by the long carved beams where nine generations of Ashdown wolves had been cut into the wood.
Someone had chiselled the faces out of the last two.
The hall was full.
Mirefold's warriors lined the walls, row on row, with their bolts down and their eyes on the floor.
At the far end, on the dais, was a high chair of black oak with a gold-ringed wolf's head on each arm.
Osric sat in it.
He had oiled his hair and put on his best coat, and he turned his signet ring on his finger as he smiled at me.
"There she is," he said. "My clever girl."
"Make her look up," said a flat voice beside him. "I want to see the eyes."
The man who had spoken wore a boiled-leather coat and no hood, and the back of his hand had a crescent tattooed on it.
He had a face.
Two dozen others of his kind leaned along the dais steps with their crossbows cradled, grey-eyed and silent.
