Chapter 23: Twelve Months
On the fourteenth of October I put on the camel coat and nothing else.
I stood in the hall mirror and buttoned it to the throat.
The wool came to my knees, and my red lipstick was the same color as the day I signed.
My hair had grown past my collarbone.
My glasses sat on my nose, and under the left sleeve of the coat, a silver crescent glowed faintly on my shoulder.
Lorcan came down the stairs in jeans and a flannel shirt, rolling his sleeves, and stopped on the third step.
"Tilda."
"Good morning."
"Is that"
"It's the coat I wore a year ago."
"Are you wearing anything under it?"
"Ask me."
He came the rest of the way down, slowly, with his eyes on the buttons.
"I want to look."
"Not yet. First, the envelope."
Hobart's office was warm, and smelled of old paper and the green lamp's dusty bulb.
The rolltop desk stood where it had always stood.
Lorcan opened the second drawer and took out a plain white envelope, soft with a year of handling.
On the front, in Hobart's blocky hand, it said, For Tilda and Lorcan, on the day.
He gave it to me.
