Chapter 8: The Bakery

On the third morning of my seven days, I baked bread in Bettina's father's bakery, because I needed something to do with my hands.

It sat on the corner of the village square, with a yellow awning and a line out the door by seven.

Bettina's father had hugged me in the doorway for a very long time and said nothing, and then put me at the second oven.

I was shaping rye loaves when the bell over the door rang and the line went quiet.

Cecily came in with a leather folder under her arm.

She was wearing the cream coat again. She looked tired and sweet and sorry.

"Isla," she said. "Do you have a minute? I'd rather do this where it's honest, not behind closed doors."

Twenty people in the shop pretended not to listen.

"I have one minute," I said. "I'm in the middle of a loaf."

"I'll be quick."

She laid the folder on the counter and opened it with both hands.

"The pack wants to make this right. The Ashdowns have offered you a house in the village, a monthly allowance and a lump sum of two hundred thousand dollars. It's real money, Isla. You'd never have to cook for anyone again."

"I like cooking for people."

"I know you do." She smiled at me. "That's why I wanted to be the one to bring it. Torin's father wanted to send a lawyer."

She turned the top page toward me and laid a pen on it.

I read the first paragraph.
