Chapter 7: Terms
I found him on my porch at dawn, asleep sitting up against the post.
He had walked back in the dark and had not knocked.
The frost had settled on his shoulders.
I stood in the doorway in my mother's cardigan with a mug, and I looked at the Alpha of Cedar Hollow, and I seriously thought about pouring the coffee on his head.
"If you're going to stay," I said, "you stay on my terms."
His eyes opened.
They were grey, and then they sharpened, and he came up off the boards so fast he nearly fell.
"Isla. I didn't mean to..."
"Three rules."
He closed his mouth.
"One. You never say the word fated again. Not once, not to me, not to anyone while I'm in earshot."
"Done."
"Two. You don't touch me unless I ask."
His throat moved.
"Done," he said, more quietly.
"Three. If I ask you something, you answer it. Truthfully. Even if you hate it."
"Done."
"You say that very fast," I said. "I'll hold you to it."
"I know you will."
He looked at the porch behind him. The third step was rotten through, and the rail leaned out over the yard.
"You want to fix something," I said. "Fix that."
"I'll need tools."
"There's a shed."
It was the only conversation I had with him that morning.
By ten he had found the saw, the hammer and my mother's box of old nails, and he was on his knees in the dirt, taking up the bad step.
Lone wolves drifted up from the shore in ones and twos.
They did not come close.
They stood at the edge of the yard with their arms folded and watched the Alpha work.
