Chapter 6: Wrist

"You never saw him," Torin said again, quieter, so that only the doctor and I could hear it.

The doctor backed into the wall and held the folder against his chest.

"Alpha, your father assured me..."

"I know what my father assured you."

Torin's voice was rough, but it was a voice that had been giving orders for years.

"Be in my office at six tonight. Bring the exam notes. If they don't exist, bring the truth."

"Torin," Cecily said, very softly, "you're not well. Let's get you home."

She reached for his arm.

He looked at her hand until she took it back.

"Take your soup to the children," he said. "It's getting cold."

Then he turned and walked out the back way, and Hugh went after him.

I stood in the silence of the waiting room with six wolves staring at me.

Cecily picked up her pot and smiled at everyone, a small brave smile, and left by the front door.

Bettina leaned over and spoke into my ear.

"She knew the date before he did."

"I know."

"Isla. She knew it."

"I know," I said. "I heard."

I did not know what to do with that, so I put it away and went home.

He came at midnight.

I was awake, sitting at my mother's table with the stove ticking, and I heard boots on the shore path.

They were slow. Somebody was walking quietly because he did not trust his legs.

I opened the door before he could knock.

Torin stood on the porch with no coat, no escort and the lake wind pulling at his shirt.
