Chapter 24: The Chair
The Harvest Moon rose over Blackmoor Hall, huge and orange, and I stood in the east corridor with my father's canvas coat over my arm.
I hadn't put it on.
I had only carried it down, the way you carry a thing you want near you.
"Luna," a small voice said.
The girl from the Garland row stood in front of me, taller by a hand, with her braids pinned up and a council apprentice's iron key at her belt.
She had taken my tray from my hands a year ago, whispering that she was sorry.
She was holding a tray now, with twelve cups of cider on it, and she looked straight at me.
"Everyone's seated," she said. "They're waiting on you."
"Who's waiting?"
"Everyone."
I laughed, and I handed her the coat.
"Hang that where I can find it."
"Yes, Luna."
"It's Ismay."
She grinned and said nothing, which told me exactly how that would go.
