Chapter 6: You'd Have to Ask

He came at midnight, exactly as his mother had said he would.

It was raining so hard that I heard the truck only when it stopped.

Joss had gone into town for the night to find me a cheap phone, and I was alone in the kitchen with the lamp on.

I opened the front door before Torin could knock.

He stood on my porch with water running off his hair and his black coat soaked through.

He had walked through the gate. He was on my land.

"Terms," I said.

"I know."

"You said you'd stay off my land."

"I did." He took a breath. "She told me you'd sleep in my bed tonight, and she told me I'd be the one to bring you. I came to say that I won't."

"You walked through my gate to tell me you won't."

"I didn't want you to hear it from anyone else."

Rain dripped off the end of his nose.

He looked so miserable and so stubborn that I stepped back and let him in.

"One towel," I said. "Then you're gone."

I gave him my mother's faded blue towel.

He rubbed his hair and stood on the kitchen floor with the towel hanging from both fists.

The lamp lit one side of his face.

I had slept down the hall from him for four years, and I had never seen him wet, or tired, or in my mother's kitchen.

"Why did you speak for me?" I asked. "At the council."

"Because it was true."

"You've never said a word against her. In four years."
