Chapter 26: Kelsey's Price
I sat in the truck on Front Street with the phone in my lap.
Kelsey's mother was crying on the other end.
"I'll find her," I said.
"You don't owe her that."
"I know. I'm not doing it for her."
I hung up.
Megan looked at me from the passenger seat.
"Where would she go?" she said. "Her apartment's empty. The salon's empty."
"Where would Shane put her?"
Megan thought about it for one second.
"The lake house."
Luke wanted to come, and so did Megan.
"No," I said. "This one's mine."
I dropped them at the farm and drove to Long Lake by myself in the dented truck.
The house was at the end of a gravel road through the pines.
Gray shingles, a deck, a dock, a little sign by the mailbox that said THE GETAWAY in white rope letters.
The address of Bayview Holdings, LLC.
Kelsey's white car was parked under the trees, with dust on it and a parking ticket under the wiper.
Nobody answered the door, so I walked around the back.
She was sitting at the end of the dock with her feet in the water.
