Chapter 16: Ask Me
I had smiled into Brent's lens with every tooth, and walked past him with a man on each side of me.
That was five hours ago.
Now I stood inside my own bedroom at the top of the stairs, with the key I had never used in my fist.
I turned it in the lock.
The bolt went home with a loud click.
Abram, Taras, Garnet and Anders stood in a half circle on the rug, still in their suit pants and dress shirts from the team dinner.
"This lock is for us," I said.
I put the key in Abram's hand.
"I stopped the pill," I said. "I took the last one on Thursday."
I looked at each of them.
"The pack is in the bin by the sink, and I'm not starting another."
Nobody moved.
The radiator ticked.
"I'm not asking for anything tonight but this," I said. "Anders. In the shower, in the basement. Say it again."
He went white and then red.
"Katja."
"Say it. All of it. Say it to me now."
He took one step toward me.
His hands were shaking, and he put them on my face, very carefully.
"I want to fill you up," he said. "I want to put a baby in you, so deep you're round with it."
His thumbs moved on my cheekbones.
"I want to see you with your hand on your stomach and know I did that."
I shut my eyes.
Something in my chest that had been clenched since September opened by one finger's width.
"Again," I said.
"I want you full of me. I want it running out of you tomorrow and the day after."
"Yes," I said, and kissed him, hard.
He made a sound against my mouth, and then his arms were around me and my back hit the wall.
I pushed him off, laughing, breathless.
"Take your clothes off," I said, to all four of them. "Now."
They did.
I took mine off too, and left the sweater for last.
I watched the milk soak a dark circle through it before it hit the floor.
