Chapter 16: The Firm
Jonas's POV
At five on Monday morning I fed my daughter and kissed my wife awake, and she kissed me back before she opened her eyes.
That was new.
For two weeks she had kissed me like someone paying a bill.
"Where are you going?" she said into the pillow.
"The yard. I need to turn in a form."
"You didn't work last night," she said.
"I called in. First time in eleven years."
She smiled, a small crooked smile with the gap in it, and I stood in the bedroom door a minute longer than I needed.
The yard at seven was gray and loud.
I walked to the shanty to ask the foreman to move my day shift up from January, and Davin was standing at the gate.
He was in yesterday's blue sweater.
He had not shaved, and he had not slept, and his truck was parked crooked on the gravel across two spaces.
It wasn't the white truck.
It was his wife's old Subaru.
"Brother," he said.
"You can't be here."
"I'm only asking for five minutes."
I kept walking.
He fell in beside me, keeping to my left, where he had walked beside me since we were boys.
