Chapter 17: The Best Thing About Her
The first screen showed a plain navy logo and a name.
The Marchbanks Patron Fund.
Under it, in smaller letters: Sole trustee, Simone Marchbanks.
The room read it.
I watched it go through the rows, on his side first, where the firm sat in their good suits.
A young analyst in the third row said "Oh my God" out loud.
Trenton turned slowly to look at the screen.
He had practiced this moment for two years, and he did it well.
His eyebrows rose, his mouth opened, and he looked from the words to me and back.
"Cor," he said, softly. "What is this?"
"Keep reading," I said.
The second screen began to scroll.
Seed loan to Sallis Capital, one point five million dollars. Never repaid.
Office lease, Sallis Capital, five years. Paid in full.
Creator grant, Pipe Dream channel, four hundred thousand dollars a year.
Bridge facility, Sallis Capital, four million dollars. Funded yesterday. Closed at 4:00 p.m. today.
A murmur started on the right-hand side and grew.
The analyst in the third row had stood up.
"The bridge is closed?" he said. "Trenton, the bridge is closed? We make payroll Monday on that."
"It's a mix-up," Trenton said, without turning. "Sit down, it's a mix-up."
"The lease," said a woman beside him. "You told us the landlord loved the firm."
"Everyone, please."
He turned and raised both hands to his people, and his voice was warm and wounded and sure.
"Simone is clearly upset with me," he said. "I deserve that. I did a stupid thing with a prank. But this is, I mean, wow. Cor, honey. I had no idea you were the patron."
