Chapter 5: The Poor Little Boy

Nolan got out of the car first and stood between me and the steps.

"Daphne. What are you doing at my house?"

"I'm your fiancee. I still have a key."

"We'll discuss that tomorrow."

"We'll discuss it now." She came down two steps, smiling for the driver and the housekeeper at the door. "I heard what you did at the courthouse. Half of Grant Street heard. You married a woman who steals, Nolan."

"She didn't steal anything. You know that."

"I know she was in the coat room, and I know she lives in a car, and I know she has a child by some man she can't name."

Headlights swung across the lawn.

A gray county sedan pulled up behind her white one, and the woman with the clipboard stepped out.

It was six o'clock exactly.

Daphne saw her and her smile grew warmer.

"Oh, good. The county. I'm so glad they came. Somebody had to be worried about that poor little boy."

I looked at her.

I put Benji down, and took his hand, and I walked up three steps until I stood level with her.

"Did you call them?" I asked.

"Of course not."

"Then how do you know the county knows he lived in a car?"

Her mouth opened a fraction.

"You said it just now. The poor little boy. You said it before the caseworker said a word."

"Everyone knows. It was in the ballroom."

"I told nobody in the ballroom where my son sleeps." I kept my voice level, because the caseworker was listening. "I told Mr. Laughlin, last night, in an alley. And I told the day center this morning."

Nolan turned and looked at Daphne.

It was a long, slow look, the kind a man gives a closed door.

"I had a car in that alley last night," he said. "My driver. He says a white sedan left right after we did."
