Chapter 13: The Photograph

Matthias read the caption over my shoulder, and I felt his whole body go solid.

He turned and looked through the glass door at the street.

A grey car was pulling away from the curb with its lights off.

He took three steps toward the door before I caught his sleeve.

"Let it go," I said. "He wants you running after it."

"He had someone follow my pregnant wife."

"He had someone follow us, and he doesn't know the one thing that matters."

"Which is?"

"That nobody put anything inside me but you."

His breath came out of him in a long shudder.

My phone buzzed again in my hand.

Dieter, from the same number.

The directors have the photograph. Board meeting Monday, nine o'clock sharp. Bring your answer, nephew.

Matthias took the phone and read it twice.

He didn't throw it, which I thought was admirable.

He handed it back and put his palm flat over my stomach, right there in the doorway of the clinic.

"Nobody takes this," he said, so low I barely heard it.

We drove home in silence.

I watched his hands on the wheel, and they never once loosened.

That night I found him in the cinema room, the one he'd used for a single documentary about locks.

He was sitting in the dark with the screen off and his elbows on his knees.
