Chapter 19: The Tech

We sat him down at the kitchen island with a towel around his neck and a mug of tea he didn't touch.

He was thirty, maybe, with a lab coat still under his raincoat and hands that wouldn't stay flat.

Matthias stood across the island with his arms folded.

I stood beside him with a blanket over my shoulders, and my pulse in my ears.

"Start at the beginning," Matthias said.

"My name is on a badge, and you can read it," said the man. "I'd rather you didn't say it tonight."

"Say what you came to say."

"In September, a man bought me a drink after work."

"He was tanned. He had white hair and a ring with a flat gold top."

My hand found the edge of the counter.

"He knew my name and my sister's name. He knew I was behind on her tuition, because the school had sent him a notice."

"He said he'd heard the clinic's storage was out of date. He said he only needed it to wobble."

"Wobble," Matthias said.

"He said one shelf. For one night. He said it would delay a procedure and embarrass a doctor."

"He said nobody would be hurt."
